Fatih Muharram 1448 (June 17, 2026): Morocco's Islamic New Year Guide

Fatih Muharram, the first day of the sacred month of Muharram, is one of the most spiritually significant days in the Moroccan Islamic calendar. On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Morocco marks the beginning of the Hijri year 1448 AH, a day of national holiday, quiet reflection, and renewed spiritual commitment.

Morocco's Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs confirmed Fatih Muharram as Wednesday, June 17, 2026: the Muharram crescent was not sighted on the evening of Monday, June 15, 2026 (29 Dhul Hijja), so Dhul Hijja was completed to 30 days (istikmāl). Verify official announcements on the Ministry of Habous Facebook page.

What Is Fatih Muharram?

"Fatih Muharram" (فاتح محرم) literally means "the opening of Muharram", the Moroccan and North African term for the first day of the Hijri new year. It is both a religious occasion and a public holiday observed across Morocco.

Unlike Gregorian New Year celebrations, Fatih Muharram is characterized by:

  • Quiet reflection and muhasaba (self-accounting)
  • Special duas and increased dhikr
  • Optional fasting in the sacred month of Muharram
  • Family gatherings around traditional Moroccan meals
  • Anticipation of Ashura, which falls 10 days later on June 26

Why Muharram Is Sacred

Allah says in the Quran:

إِنَّ عِدَّةَ الشُّهُورِ عِندَ اللَّهِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve lunar months in the register of Allah, from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.”

- Quran 9:36

Muharram is one of the four sacred months (الأشهر الحرم), alongside Rajab, Dhul Qi'dah, and Dhul Hijjah. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

"The best fasting after Ramadan is the month of Allah, Muharram." - (Sahih Muslim)

The Hijri calendar's starting point, the Hijra of the Prophet (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, was also chosen to mark Muharram 1, making the month a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and new beginnings.

Dua at the Beginning of the New Year

This dua is widely recited in Morocco on the first evening of Muharram:

Allahumma antal-abadiyyul-qadimu al-awwal, wa 'ala fadlikal-'azimi wajudikal-mu'tamad, wa hadha 'amun jadidun qad aqbal, as'alukal-'ismata fihi minash-shaytani wa awliya'ih, wal-'awna 'ala hadhihin-nafsil-ammara bis-su'

"O Allah, You are the Eternal, the Ancient, the First. In Your great bounty and generosity I trust. A new year has come, I ask You for protection in it from Satan and his allies, and for help against the soul that commands evil."

Dua for Forgiveness

Allahummaghfir li ma salafa wa barik li fima baqiya

"O Allah, forgive what has passed and bless what remains."

Dua for a Blessed Year

Allahummaj'al hadhal-'ama 'ama khayrin wa barakatin wa yusrin wa salam

"O Allah, make this year a year of goodness, blessing, ease, and peace."

Short Dua for the Morning of Fatih Muharram

"My Lord, bring me into this year in safety and take me out of it in safety."

Fasting on Fatih Muharram

While fasting on 1 Muharram is not explicitly prescribed in a specific hadith, the general virtue of fasting in Muharram applies from the very first day. Many Moroccan scholars and families begin Muharram with a voluntary fast.

  • The concept of months as time given by Allah, to be used well
  • Setting personal goals for the new Islamic year

What Fatih Muharram Teaches Us

The Hijri calendar begins not with a victory or a celebration, but with a migration, an act of sacrifice, faith, and trust in Allah. The Prophet (PBUH) and his companions left their homes, their property, and their lives behind in Mecca, walking toward the unknown, guided only by their certainty in Allah's promise.

Fatih Muharram asks us every year: What are you willing to leave behind for the sake of Allah?

It may be:

  • A habit that distances us from Him
  • Pride that prevents us from seeking forgiveness
  • Comfort that stops us from serving our community
  • Distraction that fills the time that belongs to worship

As Morocco marks the new year, let each home become a place of sincere dua, renewed commitment, and quiet hope, the same spirit that carried the companions of the Prophet (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina.
