Day of Arafah 2026: Complete Fasting Guide, Best Duas & Spiritual Virtues

The Day of Arafah is the holiest day of the Islamic year. On this day, millions of pilgrims stand on the plain of Arafah in the most essential rite of Hajj, while Muslims around the world fast, make dua, and remember Allah in one of the greatest acts of worship available outside the pilgrimage itself.

In 2026, Morocco's Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs has confirmed that the Day of Arafah falls on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 (9 Dhul Hijja 1447 AH), with Eid al-Adha the following day on May 27, 2026.

When Is the Day of Arafah 2026?

EventDateHijri Date

Day of ArafahTuesday, May 26, 20269 Dhul Hijja 1447
Eid al-AdhaWednesday, May 27, 202610 Dhul Hijja 1447

These dates have been confirmed by Morocco's Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs following the official moon sighting.

Why Is the Day of Arafah So Important?

The Day of Arafah holds an unparalleled status in Islam for several reasons:

1. The Completion of the Religion

On the Day of Arafah during the Farewell Pilgrimage, Allah revealed one of the most significant verses in the Quran:

“This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as a religion.”

— Quran 5:3

This verse alone establishes the Day of Arafah as a day of divine completion and favor.

2. The Covenant with Allah

The Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Allah took the covenant from the loins of Adam on the plain of Arafah. He brought forth from his loins all his offspring whom He created, and spread them before Him like ants, and He spoke to them directly, saying: 'Am I not your Lord?' They said: 'Yes, we testify.'”

— Quran 7:172 (reported by Ahmad)

This primordial covenant, where every soul acknowledged Allah as its Lord, was taken on the plain of Arafah.

3. The Greatest Day of Forgiveness

The Prophet (PBUH) said:

"There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of Arafah. He comes close and expresses His pride to the angels, saying: 'What do these people want?'" — (Muslim)

On no other day does Allah liberate more souls from the Hellfire. This is a day of cosmic mercy.

Fasting on the Day of Arafah: Rules and Virtues

The Reward of Fasting

The Prophet (PBUH) was asked about fasting on the Day of Arafah, and he said:

"It expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year." — (Muslim)

This is an extraordinary promise: one day of voluntary fasting that erases the minor sins of two entire years. No other voluntary fast carries this dual atonement.

Who Should Fast?

  • Non-pilgrims (those not performing Hajj): Fasting is highly recommended (Sunnah Mu'akkadah)
  • Pilgrims performing Hajj: Fasting on the Day of Arafah is not recommended, the Prophet (PBUH) did not fast while standing at Arafah during the Farewell Pilgrimage, in order to have strength for the rituals

Niyyah (Intention) for Fasting

The intention should be made the night before. A simple intention in your heart is sufficient:

"I intend to fast tomorrow, the Day of Arafah, seeking reward from Allah."

The Best Duas to Recite on the Day of Arafah

1. The Best Dua of All

The Prophet (PBUH) was asked: "Which dua is the best?" He replied:

"The dua on the Day of Arafah, and the best of what I and the prophets before me have said is:

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul mulku walahul hamd, wahuwa ala kulli shay'in qadir." — (Ahmad, Tirmidhi)

Translation: "There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs all dominion, to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things competent."

2. Dua for Forgiveness

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَعَافِنِي وَارْزُقْنِي

Allahummaghfir li warhamni wa 'afini warzuqni

"O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, grant me well-being, and provide for me."

3. Comprehensive Dua of the Prophet

“رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar "Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire.”

— Quran 2:201

4. Dua for Parents

“رَبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا Rabbirhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.”

— Quran 17:24

5. Dua for Guidance

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina

"O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and independence." — (Muslim)

How to Maximize the Day of Arafah: A Practical Schedule

Before Fajr

  • Make the intention to fast before sleeping or before Fajr
  • Wake up for suhoor, eat a wholesome meal with complex carbohydrates and water
  • Pray Fajr on time, preferably in the mosque

Morning (After Fajr to Dhuhr)

  • Recite the best dua (La ilaha illallah...) at least 100 times
  • Read Quran, aim for at least one juz (part)
  • Make personal dua for your family, health, provision, and the Hereafter
  • Repeat istighfar (Astaghfirullah) abundantly

After Dhuhr

  • Pray Dhuhr on time
  • Increase in dhikr: Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar
  • Make dua with full concentration, raise your hands and supplicate sincerely

After Asr (The Golden Hour)

  • The time between Asr and Maghrib is especially blessed for dua on Arafah
  • The Prophet (PBUH) said: "The best of dua is the dua on the Day of Arafah", maximize this window
  • Continue reciting the best dua, sending salawat on the Prophet, and seeking forgiveness

At Maghrib, Breaking the Fast

  • Break your fast with dates and water, saying: Dhahabadh-dhama'u wabtallatil-'urooqu wa thabatal-ajru insha'Allah
  • "The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills."
  • Pray Maghrib and continue with worship through Isha

Dhikr and Takbeer for the Day of Arafah

From Fajr of the 9th of Dhul Hijja until Asr of the 13th, Muslims are commanded to proclaim the takbeer:

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah, Wallahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Walillahil Hamd

Recite this after every obligatory prayer and throughout the day. In Morocco, mosques across the country resound with this takbeer from the minarets.

Things to Avoid on the Day of Arafah

For those who intend to offer the udhiya (sacrifice on Eid al-Adha), the Prophet (PBUH) advised:

"Whoever wants to offer a sacrifice, when the new moon of Dhul Hijja begins, let him not remove anything from his hair or nails until he has offered his sacrifice." — (Muslim)

Additionally:

  • Avoid wasting time in idle talk or excessive social media
  • Avoid arguing or holding grudges, this is a day of forgiveness
  • Avoid eating during fasting hours (for non-pilgrims)
  • Do not neglect the five daily prayers

The Spiritual Connection: Pilgrims and Non-Pilgrims

While the pilgrims at Arafah engage in the most intense form of worship, standing, weeping, and supplicating for hours on the sacred plain, non-pilgrims are not excluded from this immense mercy. The Prophet (PBUH) deliberately connected the worship of both groups:

  • Pilgrims engage in the Wuquf (standing) at Arafah, the essence of Hajj
  • Non-pilgrims participate through fasting, dua, dhikr, and charity

Both groups share in the forgiveness and mercy that descends on this day. As the hadith states: "There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire."

Charity on the Day of Arafah

Giving sadaqah on the Day of Arafah carries multiplied rewards. Consider:

  • Donating to a local mosque or Islamic school in your Moroccan city
  • Contributing to food banks that distribute Eid meals to the needy
  • Sponsoring an udhiya for a family that cannot afford one
  • Giving to Zakat if your nisab threshold has been reached

Even a small amount given sincerely on this day is magnified in the sight of Allah.

Conclusion: Seize This Day

The Day of Arafah 2026 arrives on Tuesday, May 26, a single day that carries the weight of two years of forgiveness. Do not let it pass without fasting, making dua, and turning to Allah with a sincere heart.

Prepare the night before: eat suhoor, set your intentions, and plan your schedule of worship. When the sun rises on Tuesday, May 26, be among those whom Allah boasts about to His angels, a servant who has turned to Him in sincerity and humility.

May Allah accept our fasting, our dua, and our worship on the Day of Arafah 2026. May He forgive our sins, grant us His mercy, and include us among those freed from the Fire.
