The Four Sacred Months in 2026

Allah designated four months as sacred, during which good deeds are multiplied and warfare is forbidden:

إِنَّ عِدَّةَ الشُّهُورِ عِندَ اللَّهِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ مِنْهَا أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months... of these, four are sacred.”

— Quran 9:36

The four sacred months, Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab, fall across 2026 as follows:

The Two Eids of 2026

Moroccans celebrate two major Eids each year:

Eid al-Fitr, Friday, March 20, 2026

The festival that breaks the fast of Ramadan. Known in Morocco as Eid al-Sghir (the Small Eid). On this day families attend the Eid prayer, give Zakat al-Fitr (~20 MAD per person), and share Moroccan sweets like chebakia, kaab el ghzal, and briouates.

Eid al-Adha, Wednesday, May 27, 2026

The festival of sacrifice, marking the end of Hajj. Known in Morocco as Eid al-Kebir (the Great Eid). Families sacrifice a sheep (or goat/cow) following the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), and distribute the meat to family, neighbors, and the poor.

Ramadan 1447, February 19 to March 19, 2026

The Ministry of Habous confirmed the first day of Ramadan as Thursday, February 19, 2026. Over 29 days, Moroccan Muslims fast from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib), filling the nights with Taraweeh prayers in every mosque across the kingdom.

The last ten nights are dedicated to seeking Laylat al-Qadr, better than a thousand months, most likely on the 27th night (~March 17, 2026).

Hajj 1447, May 2026

Morocco's official Hajj quota for 1447 AH is 34,000 pilgrims, with an official package cost of approximately 63,021 MAD per pilgrim (a reduction from the prior season) and a digital upgrade of the registration process. The rites take place from 8–13 Dhul-Hijjah (May 25–30, 2026), climaxing at Arafah on May 26 and Eid al-Adha on May 27.

Islamic New Year 1448, June 17, 2026

The Hijri year 1448 AH begins on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, marking the anniversary of the Prophet's migration (Hijra) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, the event from which the Islamic calendar counts its years.

Ashura 1448, June 26, 2026

Ashura (10 Muharram 1448) falls on Friday, June 26, 2026. The Prophet ﷺ recommended fasting this day (and the 9th alongside it) for the expiation of the past year's sins. In Morocco, Ashura carries a distinctive tradition of generosity to one's family and charity to the poor, and it is a natural moment to settle one's Zakat al-Mal (silver nisab ~7,438 MAD for 2026).

How Morocco Determines the Dates

Unlike countries that rely solely on astronomical calculation (such as Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar), Morocco confirms each month by naked-eye moon sighting (ru'yah). A national committee of religious scholars, astronomers, and ministry officials gathers on the 29th of each month; if the crescent is sighted, the new month begins that evening. If not, the current month completes 30 days.

This means Moroccan dates can occasionally differ by one day from Saudi Arabia, most often for Ramadan and the two Eids. Always rely on the Ministry of Habous announcement as the authoritative date for Morocco.
